about

In January 2011, torrential rain and flooding destroyed lives and properties throughout Queensland, Australia. It will cost an estimated $1.5B to repair the damage caused and the human cost cannot be gauged.
I wrote "The Ground On Which I'm Standing" six years ago when I first came to Australia and was trying to get my head around the idea of living on the other side of the world, far from home and family... It's taken me a long time to feel like I belong here, that I have a part to play in this amazing country and that feeling came stronger than ever during the floods. The sense of community, friendship and solidarity in the face of disaster was an extraordinary thing to witness, and I am grateful to be here to do so.
I am especially grateful to the people who helped make this recording, especially to Rory O Donahue who made the whole project possible. It all came together over a couple of impromptu sessions in an old converted church hall in Brisbane and ended up with more than a little old-school country...

People find a way to continue on, no matter what.
This song is dedicated to them.

lyrics

THE GROUND ON WHICH I’M STANDING
Alan Boyle

Standing at the traffic lights
Both dressed in horizontal stripes
Waiting for the lights to change
Send them on their merry way
Some kids, they got all the luck
And I just want the simple touch
But that would make me come unstuck from all the ties that bind me

Living upside down
Everything’s turned around
And I can’t find the ground on which I’m standing

Well it used to be that love was strong
She was right when I was wrong
But she don’t even like this song
Time has cruelly changed me
And everyday I hear from you
The reasons why you hate me too
I wrote an article of truth then cancelled my subscription

Living upside down
Everything’s turned around
And I can’t find the ground on which I’m standing

Oh we start with such fresh hearts
But give the best parts away
And every night the stars shine bright
But no longer light your way

So, credit owed where credit’s due
And love taught me a thing or two
And I’ll admit that you have too
But baby, I’m still learning
Used to write our days in stone
But at least I do not ride alone
We’ve got a star all of our own and look how she is shining….

Living upside down
Everything’s turned around
And I can’t find the ground on which I’m standing
Living upside down
Everything’s turned around
And I will find the ground on which I’m standing
On which I’m standing.

Born under the weeping Irish stars, Alan Boyle wandered the earth for years before falling asleep at the gates of Australia where a family of possums took him in and dressed the wounds on his fingertips.
